Reading “The Year Without Pants” by Scott Berkun. Interesting that (at least at the time he worked there), all of Automattic communicates almost exclusively through P2 blogs and IRC, both of which maintain an infinite, publicly available (withing the company) history of all communication, decisions, discussions, etc…

Happy Engineer

WordPress is made by a company called Automattic. I don’t know why they spell it that way.

In their words, they are “always hiring.” And a role they are always hiring for is “Happiness Engineer.”

I love my current job. But if Automattic offered me a job tomorrow as a Happiness Engineer, I would very likely take it. There are a few reasons.

  • I would work from home, in my pajamas.
  • I would be supporting users of one of the most amazing pieces of software ever produced.
  • I would be groovy.

So maybe someday I will submit a resume to them to become one of those Happy folks who work in their happy place.

But not today. As I’ve said, I am “happy” at my current gig.
